Finding the splendor in everyday moments and capturing it in mosaic has brought joy to my life. Likewise, interpreting abstract ideas and translating with tactile materials into a touchable mosaic is always fascinating. I have found particular pleasure in creating three-dimensional hand-built substrates for my mosaics, but I love exploring in two dimensions as well. I enjoy the intense challenge mosaic presents as a vehicle to convey ideas and beauty. I believe this passion for mosaics is a gift that must be nurtured and always appreciated and can be built upon for years to come.

Julie Mazzoni is best known for her three-dimensional conceptual and two-dimensional realism mosaics. There is a harmony in her mixed media mosaics that comes from knowing the mosaic “rules” and breaking them when necessary. After living in six cities in twelve years while raising four children, sense of place and home became a driving theme in her work, which has been influenced by contemporary mosaic masters Guilio Menossi and Ilana Shafir. The beauty of mosaic is not the uniformity of hand-cut pieces, but rather in celebrating the variety of texture, shape and reflectivity of tesserae while still seeing the whole work. It is a clear reflection of each of us and our part in the whole of society.
